I had planned to launch my Substack on the 1st of July. It was exciting: an independent platform that would let me publish reportage, investigations, and interviews without having to worry about gatekeepers. But I have been the subject of so much shameless intimidation that I have had to keep journalism on hold for that last three months as I consulted with five lawyers, a tax expert and a chartered accountant; and appeared before investigating agencies where I was grilled for ten hours at a stretch with no strength left to pursue my work.
Two days ago, I finally launched this Substack and spoke exclusively to TIME magazine about the ordeal and the threats to my life. I am linking to the article here for my Substack subscribers, and so that the world can have a glimpse into my struggle. To each one of you who have subscribed and shown so much love to my debut piece, I am indebted.
Journalism is under attack, and I would urge you to become a paid member of my Substack; it will help me spend more resources on journalism and in-depth reporting from India, and it will help platform young, independent journalists who wish to make a difference, and who we plan to publish here, as well.
Deeply moving piece Rana. Wish you good health and happiness always.
